What defines wealth amongst young SA go getters? By Jaded Princess

"I was chatting to a friend on Blackberry Messenger or BBM and asked her a simple question, what defines wealth amongst us young people? Her response was straight up yet confusing. She replied "We mistake wealth for debt" I thought about it and agreed with her point. Today I think it has changed. Wealth now means "flossing". Driving expensive cars, wearing name brand clothing, wearing the latest fashion trends, indulging in ridiculously priced items, living in a suburb, to be precise living in the "Northern Suburbs" (which depicts a life of "fabulousity") and splurging on whatever, whenever, even if it means ending up in debt.

To me wealth means not only having abundance of money, but to be successful in your own right as a person. If that means getting an education or accomplishing one's goals and dreams or just understanding your purpose on earth and having an identity.

What happened to travelling around the world and gaining knowledge and new experiences? I'm not from a wealth background, but I have become wiser by meeting different people, listening to them, travelling, doing community work, going to church, and just being humble. I can truly say that I can survive in a different country on my own, because of the way I was raised. That does not define wealth but it defines who I am as a young South African and having my own identity.

Money isn't everything. A wealthy person to me would be successful, intelligent, hard working, accomplished, well spoken, well rounded, humble person who know who they are and not trying to be what they're not. Respect defines wealth too. If you are well respected for who you are and what you do, you have all the wealth money can't buy.  Hey, this is just my opinion...
